![]() Karen Lord's debut, Redemption in Indigo, has been on my reading list for quite a while, but having never gotten around to it, I jumped at the chance to receive a review copy of her latest book, The Best of All Possible Worlds, and was lucky enough to receive one from Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review. Along the way, Grace connects with and befriends the reserved Sadiri people, changing her life and theirs forever. Their journey takes them far and wide into different places and cultures, all of which have some relation to the now lost Sadira. ![]() ![]() It is here, with the help of biotechnician Grace Delarua, that they search for distant Sadiri cousins with whom to reunite and potentially marry. ![]() With the planet Sadira destroyed, the few remaining Sadiri-mainly men-seek refuge on Cygnus Beta, a veritable melting pot of refugees, races, and cultures. ![]() ![]() ![]() On the other hand, The Horizontal Poet does occasionally reference disability (the title is a reference to this) and sexuality activism. One poem, “On the Street”, seems to be almost entirely a “transvestite” joke, and another poem refers to “MTV hos”. The author is bisexual, but there isn’t a lot of references to sexuality in The Horizontal Poet. There were a few instances that made me hesitant, however. ![]() There is a lot of variety in this collection, and some of my favourites are great little encapsulations of a situation, including emotional poem about a hospital during Hurricane Katrina. ![]() Some of these include medical terminology completely lost on me, which made that tagline a little odd in relation to The Horizontal Poet. Many, however, are medical, describing life inside a hospital. Some of the poems are very easy to read and straightforward, while other are more abstract and difficult to follow. And that is true with The Horizontal Poet, to some extent. The review copy of this book came with a business card from the publishing company, Zeitgeist Press, and the tagline on that card is “Poetry you can actually read”. ![]() ![]() Macy’s imagination is not only expansive, but also nuanced, as her stories are often filled with subtle nuances and clever twists. Usually "I research, think, and ideate over each city for three weeks before making sketches." The final drawings and cut-outs take around a week to produce. Invisible Cities, which imagines fictional conversations between the (real-life) Venetian explorer Marco Polo and the aged Mongol ruler Kublai Khan, has been instrumental in framing approaches to urban discourse and the form of the city. Italo Calvino (Italian: italo kalvino 15 October 1923 - 19 September 1985) was an Italian journalist and writer of short stories and novels. Her collection, which ArchDaily published in 2016, and again in 2017, consists of mixed media collages, drawn mainly using ink on paper, brings together a sequence of imagined places – each referencing a city imagined in the book. Lima-based architect Karina Puente has created a new series in her personal project: to illustrate each and every "invisible" city from Italo Calvino's 1972 novel. ![]() ![]() This section needs additional citations for verification.
